Motorcycle Safety Checklist

Motorcycle Safety Checklist Scaled

This motorcycle safety checklist was created by Tate Law Offices, P.C., to remind you about critical safety measures and safety issues that you should look for before your next ride.

Be sure to check all of the following before you go out to avoid any potential motorcycle accidents:

  • Be aware of local helmet laws. In Texas, all motorcycle riders are required to wear a helmet that meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #218, with one exception: riders who are over 21 years of age who have completed a Department-approved Motorcycle Operator Training Course or can provide proof of medical insurance coverage of at least $10,000.
  • Consider wearing a helmet anyway. Studies have shown that wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can save your life. It’s absolutely crucial that you make sure your helmet is in good condition. Make sure it fits comfortably and snugly and check for any cracks before putting it on. If you’re shopping for a new helmet, be sure it has been certified by the Department of Transportation.
  • Wear protective gear. Make sure to wear gloves, a jacket, protective boots, and other protective gear when riding. Protective clothing should be durable, fit well, and should be in good condition to provide maximum protection.
  • Check your tires before riding. Because you’re riding on two wheels instead of four, it’s all the more important that you ensure both tires have good tread before you take off. If the road is wet or if you have to stop or change lanes suddenly, you’re going to need tires with good tread.
  • Check your brakes before, during, and after a ride. Test your brakes to make sure they are in good working order. Replace worn brake pads aren’t worn down and your brake fluid is full.
  • Check your mirrors. Changing lanes can be dangerous when you’re on a motorcycle. Adjust your mirrors and make sure there are no cracks so you can see other vehicles around you.
  • Check your fluid levels. Check the bike’s fluid levels before riding and top them off regularly.
  • Test your lights and turn signals. It takes no more than a minute to check all of the lights on your bike. Test your headlight, your brake lights, your turn signals, and your flashers to make sure everything is in good working order.
  • Test your clutch and throttle. Test both the clutch and throttle to make sure they feel natural. If one or the other gets stuck or fails to operate, a serious accident could happen.
  • Examine the frame and suspension. Check for any signs of damage to the motorcycle frame, including the exhaust and your kickstand. You may also want to give your suspension a check, including rear shocks and front suspension fork.

Checking these items should take no more than a few minutes before and after a ride, but it could make all the difference to your safety and the safety of those around you.
