Texas, unfortunately, has some of the deadliest highways in America. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there were 3,542 fatal crashes that caused 3,896 fatalities in Texas for the most recent year for which data is available.
One person was killed every two hours and 15 minutes on Texas roads during the year and one person was injured every two minutes and 34 seconds, according to TxDOT data.
The five deadliest highways in the Lone Star State include:
1) I-45 – Houston
I-45 has been dubbed the most dangerous U.S. highway. I-45 averages 56.5 fatal accidents or every 100 miles. Houston is the deadliest stretch of the highway with 73 deaths in one recent year. Part of the danger of the highway is faulty infrastructure, which policymakers are working to improve.
2) Stemmons Freeway (I-35E) – Dallas
Dallas has one of the deadliest freeways in America. Stemmons Freeway, extending from I-35 East between the I-30 Interchange and Exit 434 had 20 fatal accidents during a recent three-year period. This equals 4.1 fatal accidents per mile.
3) Marvin D. Love Freeway – Dallas
The most hazardous section of Marvin D. Love Freeway in Dallas runs from Camp Wilson Road to Illinois Avenue. There were 15 fatal accidents on this portion of the freeway for a recent three-year period.
4) Tomball Parkway (TX – 249) – Houston
Tomball Parkway is the third deadliest road in Texas. The worst part of the road is between Antoine Drive and W. Greens Road. There were 14 fatal collisions along this stretch of road during a recent three-year period. This dangerous road averages 3.2 fatal accidents per mile.
5) Texas 12 Loop – Dallas
Texas 12 Loop from South Lancaster Road to Longacre Lane is one of the most dangerous roads in Texas. 12 fatal accidents occurred here within a recent three-year period.
Other Dangerous Roads
A recent study by MoneyGeek evaluated more than 10,000 crashes on Texas roadways for a recent three-year period. From that data, they determined the deadliest roads in Texas.
Some of the other dangerous American roads here in Texas that were analyzed in the study include:
- North Freeway I-45 in Houston – The most dangerous section of this highway runs between Airtex Drive and Metro Texas 249 Station. There were 12 fatal crashes along this route during the study’s analysis period.
- Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, Mesquite, and Garland – The most dangerous section of this highway runs from Jupiter Road to the I-30 interchange, which was responsible for 12 fatal crashes for the analysis period.
- TX-183, Irving, Fort Worth, and Euless – The hazardous portion of this highway runs between North Beltline Road and North Industrial Boulevard. There were also 12 fatal crashes along this stretch of highway that occurred during the analysis period.
- I-20, Fort Worth, Forest Hill, and Kennedale – The most hazardous section of this highway runs from the I-820 interchange to the I-35 West interchange.
