A road trip with kids can be a challenge on any day of the week. But it can be particularly stressful during the holidays.

- Fish School (iOS, Android) — Geared toward preschoolers, this game teaches letters, numbers 1-20, shapes and colors using colorful fish that can swim and move with a touch and drag feature. The app has won the Parents’ Choice Gold Award and the Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice Award.
- PBS Kids Games App (iOS, Android) ― This app gives you access to 90 learning games using characters from popular PBS kids’ shows. Kids 2-8 can choose games from any of their favorite shows to find lessons in language, science, math, technology and creativity.
- Poptropica (iOS, Android) ― This adventure-based game allows kids ages 6-15 to enter a virtual world where they can create their own characters and complete quests by visiting different “islands.” Kids can play on their own or enter common areas where they can play against someone else. The game was created by Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series.
- Science360 (iOS, Android) ― The National Science Foundation (NSF) created this app so that kids ages 12 and up can learn about the latest science and engineering research completed by NSF, scientists and colleges and universities around the world. Kids can pick the images that interest them and then touch them to learn more about the science behind them.
- Flow Free (iOS, Android) — Kids create complex puzzles by connecting matching colored dots together to form “pipes” that cannot cross or overlap. Flow Free has 2,500 levels and can be played at a leisurely rate or in time trial mode. It’s recommended for kids 8 and up.
