Top Apps to Keep Your Kids Occupied on Road Trips Over the Holidays

Kids Playing Distracted Driving Accident

A road trip with kids can be a challenge on any day of the week. But it can be particularly stressful during the holidays.

Heavy traffic may keep children stuck in the car for hours longer than anticipated. Parents often find themselves trying to resolve sibling squabbling and complaints of boredom from the backseat instead of focusing fully on the roads ― and that can be the recipe for a distracted driving accident.

Most people think of distracted driving as a teenage behavior. But the struggle is real for parents too. One research study found that parents took their eyes off the road an average of 3 minutes and 22 seconds out of a 16-minute trip to manage the needs of their children.

No parent would intentionally endanger his or her child, but a moment’s distraction can have serious consequences if a car accident occurs.

Today’s technology makes it easier to keep youngsters occupied in the car. To give yourself some holiday peace of mind, Tate Law Offices, P.C., suggests you to consider these free travel apps for kids before you hit the road this year:

  1. Fish School (iOS, Android) — Geared toward preschoolers, this game teaches letters, numbers 1-20, shapes and colors using colorful fish that can swim and move with a touch and drag feature. The app has won the Parents’ Choice Gold Award and the Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice Award.
  2. PBS Kids Games App (iOS, Android) ― This app gives you access to 90 learning games using characters from popular PBS kids’ shows. Kids 2-8 can choose games from any of their favorite shows to find lessons in language, science, math, technology and creativity.
  3. Poptropica (iOS, Android) ― This adventure-based game allows kids ages 6-15 to enter a virtual world where they can create their own characters and complete quests by visiting different “islands.” Kids can play on their own or enter common areas where they can play against someone else. The game was created by Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series.
  4. Science360 (iOS, Android) ― The National Science Foundation (NSF) created this app so that kids ages 12 and up can learn about the latest science and engineering research completed by NSF, scientists and colleges and universities around the world. Kids can pick the images that interest them and then touch them to learn more about the science behind them.
  5. Flow Free (iOS, Android) — Kids create complex puzzles by connecting matching colored dots together to form “pipes” that cannot cross or overlap. Flow Free has 2,500 levels and can be played at a leisurely rate or in time trial mode. It’s recommended for kids 8 and up.

The holidays are hectic for everyone. Protect your family by downloading travel games for kids to minimize your own distractions. But any traveler is at risk for a serious injury in an accident caused by another driver. If you or a loved one was hurt in a car accident in Ft. Worth, Houston, Dallas or anywhere in Texas, contact Tate Law Offices, P.C., for help.
